Rangeland
Evaluation and Monitoring Partnership
A Collaborative Agriculture Education Project
for the Four Corners Region
The
participants will select the topics for each of the
diverse landscapes chosen for the walkabouts. Possible
topics include:
Alternative monitoring and evaluation techniques
Traditional ecological practices
Plant
and soil communities in transition
The
roles of livestock and wildlife
Bird
watching
Riparian
restoration techniques
The Vision
To
bring together agriculturists from throughout the
Four Corners region to sites on or near Navajo,
Zuni, and Hopi lands to determine, by means of
direct observation, the evaluation and
monitoring techniques that are appropriate for
selected
rangelands.
Inspiration
The landscape itself has much to tell us about ecological balance.
Likewise, ranchers and grassroots Native
agriculture practitioners who
have spent years observing their local
landscapes have practical knowledge that is
often overlooked. The landscape and the people
who inhabit the landscape are the inspiration
for seeking a new way of evaluating and
monitoring native lands.
Opportunity
The Navajo Nation Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with the
University of Arizona Cooperative
Extension, and Navajo RC&D, was
awarded $100,000 from the USDA's
Western Sustainable Agriculture Research
and Education (WSARE) to coordinate this
regional partnership.
